The Genspace Teen Leadership Council (TLC) is a group that promotes youth leadership as they take action, support their communities, and explore their interest in STEAM. We have multiple teams that lead projects in education, activism, and social activities. As a part of Genspace - the world’s first community biology lab and a place where people of all backgrounds can learn, create, and grow with the life sciences - TLC has a passion for learning, educating, and making science accessible for everyone. TLC strives to create a collaborative and inclusive space for teens to grow, learn, and give back.

Education

The education team, led by Evelyn Ortega and Juliette Ziegler, organized a collaboration with SciStarter, BioBus, and the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) system to share hands-on “STEAM Challenge” activities through a “grab-and-go” initiative at the libraries. We packed 100 low-cost scientific investigations and instruction sheets for families to pick up at the BPL lobby service.

In the fall, we will collaborate with the District 38 Youth Committee, Marisol Martinez and Marifer Sanchez, to plan and implement a youth tutoring and STEM education initiative for the neighborhood.

Activism

The activism team, led by Agalby Morel and Daniela Shoham, has focused on the Community Fridge Project, a grassroots-led Go-Fund-Me campaign that raised $560 from their families, friends, teachers, and other supporters. With these funds we shopped at local farmers markets and Black-owned businesses, and then stocked four different community fridges. We presented this project at the 2021 Intrepid Museum Virtual Youth Summit, which reached 300 participants.

Social

The social team, led by Evelyn Ortega and Daniela Shoham, organizes socials, game nights, picnics, and potlucks for members of the Teen Leadership Council to make friends and have fun! In addition to working on projects to help our community, the TLC also recognizes the need to relax and enjoy social events in the lab.
